2nd Grade

2nd grade is a year full of physical and mental growth as children begin to develop more complex reading and writing skills. In 2nd grade, reading and writing are closely intertwined with our project work leading to deep levels of reading comprehension, synthesis of new information, and purposeful writing. Our students engage in meaningful, interest driven research and critical thinking to create high quality writing across a variety of genres.

Curriculum Snapshot

Language Arts

Solidify understanding of reading as an interactive thinking process beyond individual words
Develop foundational comprehension strategies such as making connection, visualizing, making predictions and inferences, and asking questions
Explore the structure of nonfiction texts and identify key elements of titles, headings, bold text, captions, table of contents, and glossary
Write in a variety of text styles including stories, informational writing, and poetry

Social Studies

Math

Continue the concrete pictorial abstract learning progression, providing opportunities with hands-on experiences and real world problems
Broaden thinking skills and extend conceptual understanding
Develop problem solving by using relevant strategies for routine and non routine problems
Develop computational fluency primarily in addition and subtraction with an introduction to multiplication and division

Science

Engage in challenging hands on activities that encourage the development of 21st century skills such as collaboration/critical thinking/oral and written communication
Demonstrate understanding of science concepts in the three scientific domains of physical, life, and Earth sciences by working in small groups
Make observations and draw conclusions about the properties of sound
Plan and carry out investigations exploring the life cycle of plants and geology of our earth to be able to draw conclusions about the world

World Language

Physical Education & Wellness

Progress toward development of mature form of locomotor/non locomotor skills and acquisition of some manipulative skills
Increase complexity of instructional setting while allowing for the developmental level of each child
Maintain moderate to vigorous activity for longer periods of time and provide opportunities to explore the relationship of activity to fitness and well-being
Work in small and large groups; provide time for exploration and
problem solving activities

Art

Continue to develop an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design by using a variety of media, genres, styles, and techniques
Begin to recognize that art is created for different purposes, ranging from individual
expression to multicultural celebrations
Develop visual thinking strategies and comment on one’s own artwork and that of others through presentations, informal discussions, and critiques
