4th Grade Travels to Florence, Alabama
Christina Coffman

Our 4th grade students took a trip to Florence, Alabama this week for a hands-on experience for their fall project work! They visited Florence Indian Mound Museum and Pope's Tavern Museum.

Pope’s Tavern has an active archaeological dig on site and our students participated in excavating, sifting, and cleaning artifacts found there

Later they learned about the Migration Story and the Cherokee story of Itse Selu. They also explored the artifacts and exhibits, visited the Native Garden, and enjoyed the view from The Mound!

Incorporating archaeology into prehistoric lessons creates an opportunity for students to develop and hone critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and even citizenship skills. Along with project work, it teaches students real-world applications for small group and cooperative learning.
