An independent private school in Birmingham, Alabama
serving infants through 8th grade
This past weekend, our 8th grade class traveled to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, making memories and learning all about Alabama’s coastal habitats. As part of their Environmental Science studies, this annual trip is a rite of passage for our oldest students on campus, filled with both learning and bonding.
The adventure began with a stop at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, where students received an overview of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. This set the stage for a weekend of exploration and discovery.
The next day, students had the opportunity to experience hands-on marine science with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Discovery Hall Programs. They spent an afternoon aboard the R/V Alabama Discovery, trawling in Mobile Bay and the Gulf and exploring the salt marsh ecosystem on the north side of the island. They tallied almost 50 different species they spotted throughout the day, including a giant Black Drum and two types of stingray.
Despite some less-than-ideal weather, the students' enthusiasm never wavered. They waded into 50°F water in the salt marsh without hesitation, demonstrating their commitment to learning. One of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab team members was particularly impressed with the students’ depth of knowledge, engagement in the programs, and the insightful questions they asked. She remarked, “I have to keep reminding myself that these are not high school students.” We are incredibly proud of our students’ respectful behavior, eagerness to learn, and active participation.
This trip not only fostered a greater understanding and appreciation for Alabama's natural environment but also strengthened the bonds among classmates. The Class of 2025 truly exemplified what it means to be curious, respectful, and engaged learners. Here's to more adventures and discoveries in the future!
