We are pleased to announce that Highlands School is partnering with the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education this spring semester. We welcome Autumn Meredith, a current senior and Elementary Education major at UAB, who is currently serving as a student teacher in Ms. Mitchell’s 2nd grade class. She will have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with Ms. Mitchell and Ms. Arnold as she works toward her degree. Autumn says she is most excited to learn about responsive classrooms and classroom behaviors. She will be on campus every day through April.
Additionally, a group of students from UAB School of Education will be on campus to observe classes in the elementary grades. Assistant Dean for Accreditation and Assessment at UAB, Dr. Lesley Sheek, says, “I believe our student teachers will enjoy the learning environment they experience at Highlands School. In the college classroom, student teachers are learning about how to engage learners and help them develop their own thinking. Highlands' curriculum, especially the focus on project-based learning, will allow our candidates to participate in rich learning experiences as they develop their teaching skills.” Janie Fahey, Director of Teaching and Learning, adds, “Part of our mission at Highlands School is to foster a love of learning in our students and community members. We are excited to partner with UAB and be a part of these future teachers' educational journeys.”
