This week is our Student Council (StuCo) installation where Damon (8th grade) will officially begin his role as Student Council President. He is beginning his 7th year at Highlands and during that time he has had a chance to observe how younger students interact with their Middle School peers. He hopes as the leader of the student body that everyone feels comfortable coming to him with ideas and concerns. We took a few minutes to catch up with the new StuCo President.
What are your goals this year as President?
I want to make sure everyone is equally represented, and that they feel that they can talk to me. I want them to see me as their friend and ally.
How will you do that?
I hope for middle school to have better relationships with the younger grades. I believe that can be done by just starting the conversation. I don’t want anyone to feel like they don’t have a voice.
Can you tell us about your plans for Student Council events?
I want to focus on creating high-quality events for our students – even if that means a smaller number of events. I think quality is more important than quantity.
What StuCo event are you most looking forward to?
The middle school dances! I am hoping to improve them with better music and gathering input from my peers. Input is key – from everyone!
