1st Grade

At Highlands School, we believe that all students are capable, competent, and powerful. Every student is a valued individual with unique social, emotional, and intellectual needs. During this transitional year in 1st grade, students become 1-1 with Chromebooks and enjoy participating in annual traditions like being the featured class in the Halloween Parade, observing the metamorphosis of the butterfly in the classroom, and recognizing their achievements on self-written collection of books with an Author’s Party celebration.

Our students create collaboratively and become independent, responsible, and caring members of the Highlands community. We believe these skills instill a habit of success and set the foundation for students to become productive members of a global, ever-changing community.

Curriculum Snapshot

Language Arts

Begin to see reading as an interactive process in which phonics, vocabulary and comprehension strategies are used
Use spelling patterns to progress from invented spelling to the use of more phonetic writing
Develop the capacity to read and write in a variety of genres
Experience individual reading and writing conferences
Develop research and presentation skills through project work

Social Studies

Develop an understanding of our state works in the context regard to economy and rules
Develop an understanding of currency, how it is used in different cultures, and how to differentiate between wants and needs
Extend understanding and appreciation for different cultures around the world
Culminate the study of cultures through the Festival of Arts and Culture

Math

Learn to model mathematically, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct arguments, and critique reasoning
Use manipulatives to solidify number sense and computation while continuing the concrete-pictorial-abstract progression
Use number talks and math journals to allow students to develop and use math language and vocabulary
Apply learned concepts in diverse mathematical situations and connect mathematics to the real-world environment

Emphasize development of fundamental motor skills, such as jumping, throwing, and catching
Guide the refinement of skills through individual practice, partner practice, and group games
Promote creative and rhythmic movement, as well as body management skills
Provide opportunities for problem solving, exploration, maximum levels of participation, and high levels of success

Art

Develop an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design by exploring a variety of materials and techniques, including two and three dimensional artwork
Learn to value the studio workspace and art materials
Develop observational, fine motor, and verbal skills
Create and respond to visual art experiences that are meaningful in their lives; provide exposure to a variety of ands on materials, from crayons to oil pastels, watercolor and tempera paints, clay and papier mâché, collage, and printmaking material

Music

Enhance each child’s music literacy through a variety of experiences and focus on the development of specific music concepts, including identifying rhythm and melody patterns, relating sound to music notation, and developing a music vocabulary to express what they hear and feel in works of music
Continue to develop skills in singing, listening, playing instruments, and creating movement
Promote progression of vocal and instrument playing skills as children experience music individually and in a group
