Highlands 6th Grader Partners with UAB to Establish the Tricia Taylor Glioblastoma Fund

In 2018 a dear family friend of Tillman Hamric ’23, Tricia Taylor, was diagnosed with Stage IV Glioblastoma. Tillman, who had developed a very special bond with Tricia throughout his childhood, stood by her side as she battled this devastating disease, admiring her strength and tenacity throughout the entire process. As Tillman’s mother, Nancy remarks, “Tricia was an exceptional woman and she and Tillman were instant buddies.” They always enjoyed each other’s company and Tillman brought such joy to Tricia’s life. Unfortunately, Tricia lost her battle with the disease on November 15, 2019.
Inspired by his friend’s courageous strength, Tillman turned his grief into action. He began an online fundraiser with all proceeds going to further UAB’s research efforts into the disease that took his beloved friend’s life. But he didn’t stop there. Just recently, Tillman, a talented singer, entered the 1st Annual Temples Got Talent at Temple Emanu-El. His rendition of Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” won the competition and he had the honor of selecting which charity would receive a portion of the $4,000 raised by the event. By no surprise, Tillman selected UAB Neuro-Oncology in honor of his “Aunt Trish.”
Upon hearing of Tillman’s big win, Tricia’s partner, Jennifer Whitaker, reached out to Tricia’s Neuro-oncologist, Dr. Burt Nabors. With their help, they established the Tricia Taylor Glioblastoma Fund. “This was a team effort, but a definite dream come true for Tillman, Jennifer, and all of us that love and miss Tricia,” said Nancy. “This fund will help fund research on behalf of Dr. Nabors and his team, but also to assist those that need help with medication, travel, food, or gas.” She continued, “We can all learn something from Tillman and Tricia, and the special friendship they had. Be kind to everyone, because you never know who you will have an impact on and inspire to do great things.”
We could not agree more and are so proud of Tillman’s accomplishment. See below on how you can donate to UAB Neuro-Oncology, for the Tricia Taylor Glioblastoma Fund.
