Whitney Byington and Other HS Students Recognized by Alabama Center for the Book

The Level One category includes fourth through sixth grades. Highlands School was the only school in Alabama to have students as young as fourth and fifth grade participate in the contest. The following fourth - sixth grade Highlands students were recognized as semi-finalists at the State Level One this year: fourth graders Adelia Crawford, Carys Gonzalez, and Finn Pak; fifth graders Olivia Altamirano, Francie Bodnar, Whitney Byington, William Donald, Katherine Effinger, Olivia Honeycutt, Sela Komisar, Gordy Morris, Andy Schwebel, Zola Thompson, and Morganne Wever; and sixth grader, Reese Alexander.

During the award ceremony Whitney read the letter she wrote to Adeline Yen Mah, the author of Chinese Cinderella, a book which made a lifelong impact on Whitney when she read it as a third grader. Watch a video of Whitney reading her letter by following this link.
