Parent University: David Schwebel

Dr. Schwebel grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he attended two independent schools, Columbus Academy (grades 1-7) and Wellington School (grades 8-12). He completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at Yale University, his doctorate in psychology at University of Iowa, and his clinical training at University of Washington. He is currently a Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His scholarly expertise is in child injury prevention and he has published over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts studying how psychological principles can be used to prevent “accidental” injuries. Dr. Schwebel is a Fulbright Scholar, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Schwebel’s focus for our Parent University was Impulse Control and Children. He discussed why children behave impulsively, how parents and teachers can help children understand when to control their impulses, and how parents and teachers can manage children’s impulsive behaviors when they get out of control.
