Silly Sock Day

Suzan Armstrong
In our kindergarten classes, we have been talking about the letter "S" in phonics.  We had shared the poem "Seven Silly Sailors" listening for the “S” sound. Several stories were shared during the week with the “S” sound such as "Where's My Sock" and "Swimmy".  Students also practiced writing the correct formation of the capital and lower case "Ss".

As a way to build in community with the middle school students, the kindergarten students invited them to a "Silly Sock Day Scavenger Hunt" during snack time. This was so much fun for our kids to have a chance to practice greeting new friends on campus by introducing ourselves. Kindergarten kids wore 'Silly Socks" to school and middle school students each sent over one sock for kindergarten students to pick out of a bag. Everyone met on the quad and the kindergarten classes searched for a Middle School student with the matching sock.

This exercise also helped our Kindergarten students practice what they have learned in math about things that "match" by looking alike.  After finding the older student with the matching sock, the kindergarten each introduced themselves and offered to share a "snack" with their new friend. Everyone was all “smiles” by the end of the activity and our kindergarten students had a chance to practice valuable skills!
