Highlands School Hosts Italian Museum Night

BIRMINGHAM, AL – On Thursday, April 6 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, Highlands School (Highlands) will host its Third Annual Country of Study Museum Night. This event is the culmination of Highlands’ school wide study of Italy throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Founded in 2014, the Country of Study Program combines authentic global learning with practical applications of 21st Century Learning (critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication, and collaboration). Focusing on a different country each school year, students immerse themselves in the history and arts of the culture and incorporate social, economic and environmental issues into their curriculum.
“As our world continues to grow smaller, we seek to enhance and broaden our students’ understanding of the world and foster a profound curiosity for the richness and diversity found in all human societies through our Country of Study Program,” says Kavita Vasil, head of school at Highlands. “It is an immersive experience from which students take away a deeper understanding of an otherwise foreign culture while moving their learning experience from theoretical to concrete.”
The Country of Study Program is supported by the generosity of the Highlands Parent Auxiliary and the engagement of each year’s Faculty Global Education Committee. This year’s Country of Study Museum Night features exhibits on Italian architecture, environmental science, history, culinary arts, geography, music and other subjects. The event will also feature an Italian Art Fair, a live performance from Red Mountain Theatre Company and a display of modern Italian vehicles.
