PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The goal of the Physical Education curriculum at Highlands is to lay the foundation for life-long health and fitness. By gaining early success in the basic physical education skills and concepts, your child will feel better about his/her ability to participate in recreational activities, be more successful if they choose to compete in youth sports leagues, and learn to live a healthier lifestyle.

A child's success in the basic physical education skills and concepts will make a positive impact on his/her success in academics. Learning the basic movement skills and knowledge in physical education helps children feel good about moving, which ultimately encourages them to be more active learners. Fundamental skills are those utilitarian (functional) skills that children use to enhance their quality of life and allow them to function better in their environment.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Fourth and Fifth grade Physical Education classes incorporate the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) program. HEAL is an evidence-based curriculum designed to teach children how to exercise and eat in the most effective way to achieve optimum health.  While participating in the HEAL program, students will use heart rate monitors to learn to play and exercise in their "healthy heart zone."  The goal is to equip students with the attitudes, knowledge, and desire to make healthy lifestyle choices now and throughout their lives.
