On September 1 and September 2, Highlands 8th grade students participated in an off-campus leadership retreat with our own Bo Garrett.
On Thursday, they worked to pack boxes of food for a brand new program of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. With teamwork and persistence, they were able to assemble 11.5 pallets of boxes, equivalent to 9,016 lbs of food! They followed up their work at the food bank with dinner at our Head of School, Kavita Vasil's home and a movie night campout in the Spencer Center.
Friday, they went on an adventure at Birmingham's Red Mountain Park. Their trip included a full tour and a session on the park's MegaZip. Our 8th grade students got their adrenaline pumping with multiple trips down the zipline.
This year's retreat was a huge success and we look forward to the leadership that our new 8th grade class will exude over the course of this year!
