Students are encouraged to participate in Highlands School's extracurricular sports program. The efforts of our physical education teachers, teacher coaches, and parent coaches focus on creating sports opportunities where every player is a valued member of a team.
 
Highlands School athletics are established to provide students with opportunities to achieve the highest degree of sportsmanship, fair play, and excellence in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The school's athletic programs enrich the educational development of all participants and help prepare students for leadership roles in society.

Winter Sports

Basketball 
Grades: 4K-8th 
We partner with BRIAA to offer basketball for students in grades 4K-6th and ASHAA for students in 7th and 8th grades.

Highlands School's goal is to create a positive basketball experience for the players by placing an emphasis on fair play and creating an atmosphere of respect for coaches, players, and officials. It is the goal of this league to establish principles that will encourage players to have the desire to develop their basketball skills in years to come for later school competition and for them to consider basketball as a long-term part of their wellness lifestyle.

4K-6th Grade Basketball Registration and Information
  • Registration ends Wednesday, October 27th
  • 4K/Kindergarten and 1st/2nd grade teams are co-ed
  • 1st -6th Grade registration is $165
  • 4K/Kindergarten is $95
  • The Highlands business office will bill you for fees
 
Practice Details:
Practice times and days are determined by the volunteer coach availability and gym availability. Practices will begin once coaches are in place and rosters are set. The goal is to start practices the week of November 1st.
 
4K/Kindergarten should plan on practicing once a week. All other grades should plan on practicing twice a week.
 
Coaches/Volunteers Needed:
Parent volunteers and coaches will be needed to make this program a success for your children.  No previous experience is required.
There is a mandatory BRIAA League meeting for all coaches on Nov. 15th. Destination TBD
 
Uniform Information:
  • Reversible jerseys and matching shorts (royal blue) are required
  • New uniforms are being purchased this year so please be sure to include sizes on registration form
Game Information:
Game dates are:
  • December 4th, 11th, 18th
  • January 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th
  • Tournament Week for 1st-6th grades will be January 31st-February 5th
  • PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE GAMES ON THE SATURDAY STARTING WINTER BREAK
Please remember, this is a commitment to coaches, teammates, and our school.  Please plan for your child to attend the majority of practices and Saturday games.

We partner with Birmingham United Soccer Association (BUSA) to offer fall soccer to students in grades 4K-8th grade. Registration is now closed. 

Cross Country
Grades: 4K-8th 
We partner with Birmingham Regional Independent Athletic Association (BRIAA) for 4K-6th grade students and Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) for 7th and 8th grades. 

Girls Volleyball 
Grades: 7th and 8th 
We partner with AHSAA to offer fall volleyball. The team is coached by our Highlands 3rd Grade Teacher, Ms. Bicksler.
