Athletics

As part of the Highlands School mission, the goal of our athletics program is to provide all of our students with opportunities to achieve the highest degree of sportsmanship, fair play, and excellence in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Students are encouraged to participate in Highlands School's extracurricular sports program. The efforts of our physical education teachers, teacher coaches, and parent coaches focus on creating sports opportunities where every player is a valued member of a team.

The school's athletic programs enrich the educational development of all participants and help prepare students for leadership roles in society. They are also an essential way for our Highlands School families to foster community, offering our families the chance to build connections outside of the classroom and grade levels.

Athletic Offerings

Basketball

We offer basketball for all students beginning in 4K. Our goal is to create a positive basketball experience for the players by placing an emphasis on fair play and creating an atmosphere of respect for coaches, players, and officials. It is the goal of this league to establish principles that will encourage players to have the desire to develop their basketball skills in years to come for later school competition and for them to consider basketball as a long-term part of their wellness lifestyle. The season typically runs from October through February.

We partner with Birmingham Regional Independent Athletic Association (BRIAA) to offer basketball for students in grades 4K-6th and Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) for students in 7th and 8th grades.

Soccer

We partner with Birmingham United Soccer Association (BUSA) to offer soccer to students in grades 3K-8th grade. There are two seasons - fall and spring. The fall season usually runs September through November. The spring season usually runs from March through May.

Our Highlands Soccer Club is a recreational club and relies on parent volunteers to serve as coaches. Erin Williams serves as the liaison between Highlands School and BUSA. Please note:  Teams are determined by birth year, not grade.

Volleyball

We offer two seasons of volleyball. We partner with AHSAA to offer girls volleyball in the fall for 7th and 8th grade. We partner with BRIAA to offer co-ed volleyball for students in grades 3rd-6th in the spring.

Cross Country

Students in grades 4K - 8th grade have the opportunity to participate in Cross Country in the fall. We partner with Birmingham Regional Independent Athletic Association (BRIAA) for 4K-6th grade students and there are usually 4 meets on Saturdays in September. We partner with Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) for 7th and 8th grades. AHSAA meets are usually after school or on Saturday mornings in September.
